The session will focus on the biological relationship between stress and trauma and the epigenetic principles connecting them to physical and behavioral manifestations. In an interactive session, the presenter will give a brief overview on the latest research into trauma affected individuals and insights into building resiliency and optimism into our professional and personal lives.

When Trauma Occurs: Action and Reaction
Session Description: Before, during and after the trauma. My session will focus on my first- hand experience of dealing with a traumatic experience in the workplace. I will discuss what may have prepared me for dealing with an event like this. I will also share my story of how the events unfolded and how I responded to the traumatic crisis. I will also share the aftermath of the trauma and how dealing with a traumatic event can be a process that takes days, weeks, months or even years.

Trauma-Informed Care – Building a Culture of Strength
Trauma is prevalent in our world and has an impact on many of the people we interact with, including our students and colleagues. This session explores how to build trauma-informed interactions and culture. Participants will develop an understanding of the pervasive impact of trauma on individual health and relationships. Guiding principles will be explored for increasing emotional and physical safety, culturally sensitive empowerment, and creating greater resilience for all. Becoming trauma informed creates a sustainable foundation in any work setting to promote strength, engagement, and recovery.

Now what? This session will help to synthesize the morning's information while tapping into the participants' current practices as they relate to trauma informed teaching. Fiona England will review trauma related local research and guide participants on an interactive afternoon to uncover and create a framework for trauma informed classes and schools. Participants will have time to discuss important issues at their table and share with the larger group. Be prepared to share!
